Text
Southeast of Aachen the Americans are within 6 miles of Düren which is halfway between Aachen and Cologne. Copies of the phrasebook which have been issued to the Americans and which are in German are being withdrawn as they are too friendly. The extended truce at Dunkirk ended at 10 o'clock this morning. 19000 civilians have left the town. Immediately after 10 o'clock our fighter bombers attacked the positions round Dunkirk. There is no confirmation that a greater attack has started. The German garrison consists of some 15000 men and the German commander has told his men to hold out until the new V-weapons are ready. Canadian casualties at Calais amounted to less than 300 and the total number of prisoners is 11000. A strong force of Lancasters last night attacked the advanced German base of Saarbrücken. Great quantities of ammunition are stored here and the place is less than 50 miles ahead of the American army. Amongst the fires a tremendous explosion was seen. 350.000 incendiaries were dropped and also many explosive bombs including 4000 pounders. The Germans sent many night fighters up but these arrived too late.
