lost contact with them. 10 miles west of
Arnhem the Germans gained some ground
but these gains were quickly wiped out.
Slow progress is being made in the Nijmegen
salient. Due to better weather conditions fighters
and fighter bombers could give closer support
to the troops. Prof. Gerbrandy and the Netherlands
Information Bureau in London said in a
statement that the Germans continue with
destruction and inundation in Holland,
even malicious flooding. He said the
Netherlands are facing its greatest disaster
in history as food- and fuel supplies are
getting rapidly exhausted. Flooding
has caused much evacuation and
close on a million acres may be flooded
by now. Some places in the North of
Holland will be without drinking water
for 5 weeks from now on. Demolitions
on industrial and port installations
are also carried out. As reprisal for the
railway strike the Germans are
withholding food supplies from the bigger
towns. The next few weeks will decide whether
Holland will remain a civilised nation.
North of Aachen the battle is growing in violence.
The 1st American Army is keeping up its pressure
but the Germans are fighting back desperately.
