have landed by sea and air on the mainland
of Greece and they have already entered the
big port of Patras. The landings are not yet on
a large scale but parachutists were dropped
and transport planes were also used.
Our seaborne forces found fighter cover
by Spitfires. The landing forces are part of
Land Forces Adriatic and the Balkan
Air Forces coordinated the attacks
yesterday. 3 airfields around Athens were
strafed without opposition.
The German escape routes from Greece are
being threatened in the West by our
air forces and also in the East by Russian
and Tito's forces in Yugoslavia. Gun positions
on the island of Corfu were also attacked.
Belgrade is being threatened with outflanking
and Russian and Tito's forces are
within 10 miles of the capital. Before these
forces can enter Belgrade a crossing of
the Danube which is 1/2 mile wide will
be necessary. Notwithstanding bad
weather 5th Army troops have made
more progress in the central sector
of the Italian front and are through
the Western part of the Apennines.
Russian forces are less than 40 mile
from the important railway junction
