Canadian troops have cleared both banks
of the river Scheldt downstream from Antwerp for 9 miles.
General Dempsey's 2nd Army launched a
new attack against Arnhem and is reported
within 2 miles of the bridge. The Germans retreat
orderly in front of the Canadian 1st Army.
General Dempsey's right flank advanced 4
miles. South and east of Nijmegen we have
pressed further into the curve of the Meuse
which advance is being made by the Americans.
In heavy fighting stiff resistance between
Lek and Waal has been broken. An armoured
tank attack has been broken up. Every tide
flood waters cover more of the area of Walcheren.
A pilot taking part in the attack on the dyke
gave a account about the bombing
which had to be done very accurate. He said
one particular anti aircraft
gunner was a nuisance but he got
a burst from his rear gunner.
A pilot who took the air photos and flew
on a height of 100 yards over the dyke reported
that Westkapelle looked deserted. Whilst the
bombing was not yet finished the water
