4/10/1944. 12.= pm. Wardell.
In the last 24 hours fighting on the Western
front took place on a limited scale. The North
Sea flooded a great part of Walcheren.
North of Aachen the infantry is fanning out
to the North and South and the first German
counterattacks aimed to seal the breach
off have been repelled. The Parrey [?] forest is in the
foothills of the Vosges. Beyond Épinal several
villages have been liberated. Russian forces
are less than 20 miles northeast of
Belgrade and south of the Danube under 40
miles from Niš. The damage to the Tirpitz
cannot be repaired where she lies but must
be done at a station such as Kiel or Gdynia.
The 14 days mourning will be for those who fell
in Warsaw. Spain will not give asylum to
war criminals. The Supreme Council of
Soviets have decreed the highest military
decoration to Lord Beaverbrook and Oliver
Littleton for arranging war supplies to
Russia and also to Field Marshal
Montgomery. Other Allied military, naval
and air commanders have also got
awards.
