and the North Sea is pouring in through the holes flooding the enemy's positions on the island. 1000 Lancasters and Liberators escorted by 750 fighters were over Southern Germany today attacking tank works at Nuremberg and an air force station west of the town. The Daimler Benz Works were also attacked. The attack of the 1st American Army has gained another 4 miles and they have reached the highway north of Aachen running to Mönchengladbach and are within 25 miles of Gladbach itself. North of Metz ground has also been gained. French troops are within 10 miles of Belfort. Today was quiet between Nijmegen and Arnhem weather was bad. General Dempsey's troops advanced 6 miles south and east of Nijmegen over the Meuse river. The Canadians have extended their bridgehead across the Antwerp - Turnhout canal. Allied troops are in Merksem the industrial suburb of Antwerp from where the Germans shelled Antwerp. After 63 days of fighting - it started the 1st August in the expectance of an early liberation - the Polish resistance has ended and General Bór said that the last shots were fired at 10 o'clock last night.
