The Air Ministry announced that Lancasters
have struck the most important air blow
of the war against German communications
in Western Germany. 96 Lancasters dropped
12000 lbs bombs on the Dortmund–Ems Canal
on the 23rd September, drowned it for many
miles and emptied it for 10 days. Air
reconnaissance showed barges laying on the bottom
of the canal. At the same time Münster
was attacked and 22 of our planes were
missing that night. The canal was heavily
defended by flak and searchlights and
during that period the Ruhr has been cut
off from the North Sea, Berlin and Eastern
Germany. Quickly following Eisenhower's
warning to the people on the isles in the
Scheldt estuary and after dropping warning
leaflets this afternoon Lancasters dropped
5 ton bombs on the dykes in Walcheren.
