Preceded by a 90 minute air bombardment
the American 1st Army launched a new
attack against the Siegfried line at 9 o'clock
this morning north of Aachen and drove on a
wedge into it 2 miles deep on a front of 6
miles. There are also 2 other thrusts 20 miles
north of Aachen one near Sittard and one
beyond the Meuse river. More to the South
German counterattacks were thrown
back at the entrance of the Belfort gap.
There is stubborn fighting at Montbéliard.
East of Nijmegen we are bombing and
shelling the Germans. The Germans are
sending cyclist reinforcements and some
300 of these were broken up by our Typhoons.
We have broadened our salient and are
within 5 miles from Den Bosch. The 1st
Canadian Army reached the Dutch
frontier on several points. The Germans
are withdrawing north of Antwerp.
In Calais we have taken over 7000
prisoners now. 1200 heavies escorted by
some 500 fighters of the 8th U.S. Air Force
made a heavy attack today on Cologne
and also on Kassel and Hamm.
