Our airborne troops are engaged in heavy
battles at Arnhem and across the Rhine at
Nijmegen. Further reinforcements have been
landed. Some hundreds of escorted Flying
Fortresses and Liberators attacked oil refineries
at Ludwigshafen. The 5th and 8th Armies improved
their positions in Italy. This is the 3rd day of good
news of the British Second Army. Yesterday there
was fighting for the bridge across the Rhine as
the Dutch call it the Waal and Stewart
McPherson reported that the bridge was in our
hands late last night. American airborne
men are also taking part. Our objective is
outflank the North of the Siegfried line. Hard
fighting takes place in Nijmegen and north
of the Waal around Arnhem. It are difficult
battles as the Germans wish to prevent the
link up of our forces. Yesterday and also today
fresh troops were landed by air. We also
cleared the Germans out South and Southwest
of Eindhoven. West of Antwerp the Canadians
have cleared most of the South bank
of the river Scheldt. North of Antwerp a fort has been
attacked by rockets. Stubborn fighting
takes place round Stalberg and 30
miles southeast of Nancy. Our armour
