We are 8 miles beyond Besançon and 16 miles south
of Belfort. Near the Italian frontier Briançon has
been retaken. Our armies in the South advanced
350 miles in 25 days, took 8 German Generals
and 70000 prisoners. General de Gaulle has
formed a new Government in which many
members of the resistance movement take part.
In Italy heavy fighting takes place in the Adriatic
sector. West of Florence we reached outposts of the
Gothic line. in the battle near Rimini 2
naval gunboats assisted. North of Florence
we took more heights. Prisoners are still coming
in in fairly large numbers. In Northern Italy
the partisans now control the Italian side of
Lake Maggiore. Today 500 Flying Fortresses and
Liberators from Italy attacked 2 oil refineries
south of Vienna. In the Russian war against
Bulgaria the cease fire order was made at
10 o'clock last night when the Russians had
taken 25000 prisoners and were only 30 miles
from the Turkish border. In Sofia big
demonstrations have been held in support
of the "Fatherland Front". 2 Regents including
Prince Cyril have been removed and replaced.
Members of the previous Government have
either fled or been arrested. The war is also
coming rapidly to Hungary.
