After 4 years and 4 months of occupation
Brussels has been liberated.
Early on Sunday our troops crossed the Belgian
frontier and late last evening they were in
Brussels. British tanks first entered the
capital. Flowers were thrown to the tanks.
The National Belgian Anthem was played.
After Rome, Paris and Bucharest Brussels is
the 4th European capital to be freed from the
enemy. It's population is 1 1/4 million.
Major General Gerard's patriots are
estimated to be a million strong.
We are now across the Somme on both
sides of Abbeville which itself is being outflanked.
The Americans are near Charleroi
and also near Nancy. Our planes yesterday
made 1000 flights main attacks being against
Brest. 2 bridges and 10 buildings were
destroyed between Antwerp and Boulogne
yesterday. In the South we are well beyond Lyon
and 15 miles north of the city. The road from
Lyon to Belfort has been cut by the Americans.
In Italy we are 13 miles beyond Pesaro
and 20 miles of the Gothic line are in our
