In honour of the occasion the Yugoslav
national anthem was played by the
B.B.C. 324 guns at Moscow also fired
24 salvos. Russian forces taking part
in this victory are the Third Ukrainian
Command. Belgrade which the
Germans occupied 3 1/2 years after
bombing it in April 1941 when the
attack on Yugoslavia began had to
be cleared street by street, house by
house and sometimes storey by
storey. The liberation completed the
extermination of the German garrison
and during the past days 8000 prisoners
were taken. The total is 14000 and
9000 dead on the battlefield.
In another order of the day Stalin
announced the capture of Hungary's
third city Debrecen by the 2nd
Ukrainian Command. The possession
of Debrecen was disputed some
days. In 5 days 11000 prisoners were
captured plus great quantities
of guns, tanks and supplies. From
tonight's Moscow communique is
clear that Russian troops are 20
miles from the Danube and 95 miles
