German attempts to break the
ring round Aachen have been
smashed. Mediterranean aircraft
today raided targets in the Vienna
area. The unparalleled air assault
continued today when 1300 heavy
bombers (Flying Fortresses and Liberators)
of the 8th U.S. Air Force attacked Cologne.
Mosquitoes also attacked the place
last night. Today's bombing was done
on instruments. Some 800 fighters
escorted but they did not meet
any air opposition. 13 bombers
and 3 fighters are missing. Heaviest
fighting takes place round Aachen
where house to house battle are
being fought. It looks as if the Germans
are sending reinforcements to Aachen
viz tanks from the North. In Venray
house to house fighting takes place
and British troops are here 5 miles
from the Meuse. East of this place
8 attacks were carried out by
rocket firing Typhoons. It is now know
that American armour is operating
on our right flank. The Germans are fighting
defensive battles against the Canadians
