British infantry now hold 1/3 rd if the
town of Venray and they are fighting
their way forward with hand grenades
whereas the tanks support them in
shooting houses together against
German 88 m/m guns appearing on
every street corner. American
troops under General Dempsey are
on our right flank and it looks as if
the Germans withdraw tanks from
this area to Aachen. Ferries across
the Meuse were also attacked by our
Typhoons. At Aachen the Germans
are showing signs of exhaustion
and no more breakthrough
attempts were made today.
The Canadians in the Scheldt estuary
are squeezing the Germans more
into the Northwestern corner of the
pocket and the troops north of Antwerp
have repelled more counterattacks.
This morning's attack on Cologne
is the 7th in less than 3 weeks. Clouds
covered the town today except an
attack on a straggling bomber
no fighters were seen. Flak however,
was intense. In the maps found at
Brussels there were also railway
