The liberation of Niš has been completed
and our Allies are only a little more
than 40 miles from Skopje. The
Germans only today report the loss
of Riga and a further retreat from
Petsamo. The only other fighting is
reported from Latvia. Russian
bombers heavily raided Insterburg
last night. In Moscow Allied diplomatic
conversations have been continued
today. American infantry gained
3 miles northeast of Aachen
and linked up with those in the South.
The Germans made 3 more counterattacks
today to relieve the city's
garrison. Inside Aachen there is grim
house to house fighting. In Holland
the British 2nd Army is pushing
the Germans out of the bulge of the Meuse
and they have pushed in soaking
rain into the outskirts of Venray where
