from Flushing but they secured 2 bridgeheads. On the Leopold canal the Canadians have to fight savage resistance and their bridgehead was further compressed. Canadians advancing north of Antwerp are within a mile of the road and railway leading into Beveland. The Germans fight defensive battles round Tilburg and Den Bosch. In the hip at Nijmegen there is uneasy silence but both forces are massing up. Beyond Aachen the Germans are fighting hard to avoid a complete link-up of our troops which would cut off the town itself. House to house battles are being fought in Aachen itself. 1100 bombers of the U.S. 8th Air Force today attacked targets in the Schweinfurt, Koblenz and Mainz districts. Some 750 fighters escorted them. Yesterday hundreds of Thunderbolts and Lightnings of the U.S. 9th Air Force attacked German airfields. 64 German planes were destroyed on the ground and 94 planes damaged.
