now it costs 3.000.000 drachmes. 30000.000
drachmes are equal to one shilling. 1 cigarette
costs 1.500.000 drachmes. The inflation is
terrible and everybody is underfed and
badly clothed. The Germans have not
acknowledges the underground armies
in Holland, Belgium, France and Greece
but the Germans are now creating Nazi
partisan organisations in Germany
themselves. The Americans already had
experience with these. Chains and wires
are being slung from tree to tree across
roads at the height of the windscreen of a
Jeep. ....[?] posts behind the lines have
disappeared. Germany will have to
be fought house by house and cellar
by cellar. These tactics are only of a delaying
kind and it will be done. The Germans
today report defeats from Yugoslavia,
Hungary and Lithuania. The Russians
are advancing on a 80 miles front into
Hungary and moving fast over the
Hungarian plains. The captured 300
places in Hungary and are only 85 miles
from Budapest. 75 km from the Hungarian
frontier a place has been liberated in Yugoslavia.
