have liberated the small place of Baarle Nassau. Canadian troops taking Merksem yesterday advanced 8 miles northeast of this suburb of Antwerp on the road to Breda. The Germans continue to try to smash the bridge at Nijmegen. Their recent attempt was made by 12 pioneers who swam to it. 2 were killed and the other 10 taken prisoner. The flooding of Walcheren continues. Some German guns are on higher positions on the edge of the isle but their supply lines are under water. The American 1st Army is meeting stiff resistance in their advance north of Aachen. The attacks were resumed this morning with powerful air support and artillery and the infantry is fanning out. Motor transport and barges were attacked last night by Mosquitoes both in Holland and the Rhineland. 5 miles southwest of Metz the fort Driant has been taken. The fort was burnt out with flamethrowers and crude oil. The Germans report fierce tank battles east of Nancy. In the Parray [?] forest and beyond Épinal fresh gains were made. Around Belfort there is still stubborn resistance. Mosquitoes bombed Kassel last night without loss. Lancasters and Halifaxes escorted by Mosquitoes and Mustangs made a concentrated attack this morning on the advanced German U-boat base at Bergen
