attacked railway and industrial targets
at Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, Mainz and
Dusseldorf. Bombing was done on instruments.
Some 250 Mustangs escorted. There was no
fighter opposition. 23 bombers and 4 fighters
are missing. Last night Mosquitoes dropped
4000 pounders on Nuremberg. Mosquitoes
were out in greater strength than usual
but the attacks lasted only 2 minutes and
were made without loss. German counterattacks
in the Adriatic sector were repelled.
There were heavy casualties on both sides.
We are 8 miles north of Florence and also
in Lucca. The mail steamer Rex (Italian) of
51000 tons was hit by 120 rockets from Typhoons.
The Germans were towing the ship, which once
held the blue ribbon, to Trieste harbour. There is
a spectacular worsening of the German
position in the Balkans. The Russians
occupied the Bulgarian port of Varna on the
Black Sea coast and the Bulgarian government
declared war on Germany. A new Bulgarian
Government was announced early this
morning. In Romania the Red Army has on
one point reached the Yugoslav frontier. 500
heavies from Italy yesterday attacked German
