Mitchells made a record attack on the
frontier place of Givet. Last night 25 trains
were hit. Mosquito night fighters destroyed
2 planes. Notwithstanding rain and
hailstorm in the South of France our
forces are approaching Tournon-sur-Rhone west
of the Rhone.
Last Saturday 8th Army troops started
attacks on the South bank of the Metauro
river. We have now broken through the
Gothic line defences o a front of 20
miles and to a depth of 3 to 4 miles.
So the last defence line South of the
river Po has been reached. Gains were
also made north of Florence. The Arno
has been crossed with tanks between
Florence and the sea. Russian
troops were in Giurgiu on the Danube
and Bulgarian frontier last night.
The Russians now control a stretch
of 200 miles of this great river. They are
also advancing west of Ploesti.
More than 1000 shot down airmen
who rescued their lives and were
held as prisoner of war in Romania
have been set free by the Russians
