of East Prussia along the Njemen has been
reached. Progress toward the Dutch
coast is going well and the Germans
have lost the grip of the battle.
At about 8.45 tonight Marshal Stalin's
main order of the day announced
that troops of the 1st White Russian
Command with massed artillery
and air support had broken into East
Prussia to a depth of 20 miles on a 90
miles wide front. The permanent and
deeply staggered defences had been
broken. 500 Lithuanian and Polish
places including Sinvalki [?] had been
cleared as well as 400 towns and
villages in East Prussia taken including
Goldap and Romunten [?]. The
whole of the Lithuanian coast except
Memel has also been cleared and this
meant a new threat to East Prussia
from the North. The big guns of Moscow
greeted this Russian success.
A large slice has also been taken
from Ruthenia and Northern Transylvania,
the upper Tisza has been crossed
and Soviet troops are less than
10 miles from Southern Slovakia.
The nickel mines at Petsamo have been
