The island is 115 miles long and nowhere the American beachhead is less than 4 miles deep. 2 towns 20 miles apart and their airfields have been captured. To avoid losses the Americans used infiltration tactics. 6 ships and 50 Japanese planes were destroyed. The beachhead is being attacked by small groups of Japanese planes. The airway to Paris had been opened again. 18 Paris streets have today been renamed after leaders of the resistance movement who died in the struggle against the Germans. The French service of the B.B.C. "Les Français parlent aux Français" is being broadcast for the last time at 9.30 tonight.
