progress to Imola. British troops occupied Thebes in Greece which the Germans evacuated yesterday. In Washington Pres. Roosevelt announced the landings on Leyte Island in the Philippines. 3 days before the landings minesweepers had to clear the mines offshore. The Japanese were taken completely by surprise with little or no opposition. 3 beachheads on the coast of Leyte were won and the losses are extremely light. Not a single ship was lost. Tanks and mobile guns pushed inland to the town and Japanese held airfields and there is hard fighting 3 miles inland. Australian naval units and aircraft also took part. The landing force was the largest employed in the Pacific and President Roosevelt sent a message to President Osmeña of the Philippines. Chiang Kai-shek also sent a congratulation message to President Roosevelt. In Britain more clothes and furniture may come soon and before long there will be more biscuits on sale now army requirements have dropped. To avoid
