over the Narew. Russian forces are now
along a 200 miles front in striking
force of East Prussia and their attacks
are aimed at Tilsit, Königsberg, Allenstein
and Danzig. In reply to German
commanders asking for reinforcements
these were told they must hold on whilst
fortifications are being prepared.
Some of these were however already
overrun by the Russians. Hungarian
propagandists say there can be
no cohesive front in the great Hungarian
plains where near Debrecen a great
tank battle was fought which turned
in favour of the Russians. Russian forces
are within 3 miles of Klausenburg (Cluj)
and the train route from Greece to
Belgrade has been cut. In Yugoslavia
the Hungarian frontier has been
reached on a 25 miles front. Mr. Stalin
yesterday gave a lunch in honour of
Mr. Churchill and Mr. Eden and other
guests. Stalin spoke about the Allied
victories in the West. In Greece the
Germans are clearing out as quickly
as they can by transport planes.
