In Hungary the Russians are making
rapid progress toward Budapest and the
river Tisza is the only main natural
obstacle before the capital. The Germans say
the Russians are keeping up their pressure
on Yugoslavia against their forces surrounded
at Zaječar. The Russians have now two
bridgeheads across the Danube. In Greece
our forces are advancing in Corinth. In the
Gulf of Salonika British ships have sunk
a German destroyer and damaged
another one. Minesweepers of the Royal
Navy have cleared many mines in the
Aegean. A steady advance is reported from
the central sector on the Italian front.
The ground however is still stiff. There is
little news from the West Coast where
American negro troops have taken 2
hill positions. Wendell Willkie died in
New York this morning. Although he
was an opponent to Pres. Roosevelt he did
not hesitate to support the land-lease
and Mr. Roosevelt today paid tribute
to him. According to reports from
Stockholm the Germans lost a destroyer
which was being built for them in a
