are blowing up all but their concrete defences
before clearing out. Between Metz and
Nancy across the Moselle General Patton's
forces of the 3rd American Army launched
a new attack over a 20 miles front at 6
o'clock this morning. By night they had
advanced 6 miles and taken 8 towns and
700 prisoners. All day yesterday 7500 sorties
were flown in the West. The day's work was
rounded off by an RAF attack with 9
Lancasters on a Rhine dam between
Mulhouse and Basle. 7 high level and
6 low level attacks were carried out.
The high level attacks with ordinary bombs
and the low level with 1200 lbs delayed
action bombs. The attack lost 2 machines.
Mustangs of a Polish squadron covered
the attack by shooting up gun positions.
Later on a Mosquito pilot on reconnaissance
saw two delayed action bombs explode
and the dam breached. He saw colossal
water columns which became waves and
this water will form an obstacle for the
Germans retreating from Belfort.
The local power station was also destroyed.
Our night Intruders saw little activity
behind the German lines and they
attacked shipping off the Dutch coast.
