Northeast of Aachen the Americans launched a
new attack today to link up with the forces
north of the town. Aachen itself is being threatened
by the new thrust and the place itself with its
garrison of 1500 S/S troops is almost sealed
off. The corridor between the two thrusts
is commanded by the American guns.
By dawn the Americans had gone on for 3
miles. American dive bombers also went in.
South of the Scheldt across the Leopold
Canal the Canadians are battling hard.
Their bridgehead was 1000 yards deep.
The correspondent Allen Melville reported
that the Canadians had been pushed
back a little and that they are now
500 yards from the canal in two pockets
which have not yet linked up. He also said
it would not be a walking to clear this
pocket south of the Scheldt. Canadian troops
advancing north of Antwerp now
dominate the road leading into Beveland
and Walcheren. On Walcheren itself there
are 8 breaches in the dykes on both sides of
Flushing and fires were seen there last
night which may mean that the Germans
