Today is the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the K.L.M. Allies troops are within 2 km of Tilburg and Canadian forces within 5 km of Bergen op Zoom. In bright sunshine over Holland today the Germans are fighting back hard against the Canadians who crossed the Leopold Canal. The Canadian front on the canal is 12 km wide and 1 km deep. More Canadian troops passed over the bridges thrown across the canal. The Canadians use machine guns, mortar and flamethrowers. Heavy fighting takes place between the Nederrijn and the Waal but there is no confirmation that our troops are across the Rhine at Arnhem. Local actions have been fought today on the British salient in Holland. Fighting also takes place round Metz and Nancy and the Americans have pressed into the central fortifications of Driant. North East of Aachen the German defences collapsed suddenly this morning and a chain of small towns was overrun. The 1st great tank battle on German soil has taken place. General Patton's troops
