British armour is pushing on from the
Nijmegen bridge. In Italy Rimini has
been occupied and we are half way
between Florence and Bologna.
The Hungarian Prime Minister has put
out peace feelings. Today is the 6th day of
fighting around Arnhem. Stewart
McPherson reported that our forward
elements are meeting strong opposition.
West of Arnhem the Germans hold
strong positions and there is savage
fighting. The position in Arnhem itself
is unclear but the Germans say the
town is in flames. The supply corridor
through Eindhoven is now 25 miles wide.
NW of Maastricht another crossing
of the frontier has been made. The American
7th Army got a substantial bridgehead
40 miles from the German frontier.
Our planes made 700 flights destroying
trucks and cars. 2 dogfights took place
with German planes. 10 German planes
were shot down and 3 Thunderbolts
lost. General Ramcke the defender of
Brest is now a prisoner of war in
Britain. Greek troops have occupied
Rimini. Southwest of the town the
