Cherbourg peninsula before the gap was closed. The Germans admit today that we reached the coast. Over Normandy there is cold rain today. Street fighting in Montebourg now goes on for days. There are now big changes elsewhere on the front in Normandy. The fact however that there is no change does not mean there is a pause in the fighting. Yesterday our air attacks ranged from Arras and Amiens to the outskirts of Paris. Today Flying Fortresses and Liberators have attacked German airfields behind the Atlantic Wall and also installations in the Pas de Calais. Our planes were out in medium strength and they were escorted. Last night 2 Ju's 88 were shot down over the Channel. On Elba several hundred prisoners have been taken including some officers. The line on which we advance in Italy is from the north of Grosseto to Perugia. In Assisi which we took St Francis was born. The new Italian Government under Bonomi has started office from its temporary seat at Salerno. The port of Wiborg is being outflanked and the Finns speak about fighting 16 miles from Wiborg. They also say the Russians had splendid air support and speak about 2000 planes in action from bases at
