The Allied troops in Normandy now hold
a 50 mile stretch coastline and have
extended their perimeter to a length of
80 miles. Fighting is going on in the outskirts of
Montebourg 17 miles from Cherbourg
and further south. American troops were
reported last night to have nearly surrounded
the key town of Carentan. American forces
have also made good progress in the centre
of the front. They pushed 5 miles S.E. of Isigny
to capture the little town of Lison and
were last reported on the edge of a forest
leading to the big road centre of St. Lô
8 miles further on. Extremely fierce
fighting is taking place in the Bayeux area and
also further east around Tilly about 11
miles inland. The Germans have
concentrated strong armoured forces
