The invasion of Italy's mainland started
at half past 4 this morning on the 4th
anniversary of Britain's entry into the
war.
Later on an Allied naval communique has
been published.
Cruisers, destroyers, gunboats and small
naval craft escorted our landing craft.
Correspondents say that it was still dark and
that there was no moon.
Yesterday evening and last night a climax
was reached in the tremendous bombing
and shelling.
The Italians made the first announcements
before noon today and they say that operations
took place on a large scale.
