Great Russian advances in the Baltic
and the Balkans put the German troops
in great danger. 1.14 end
2.= pm. Michael Harrison.
The Canadians are holding on to their
bridgehead across the Leopold canal in
face of stubborn resistance. The two
American columns round Aachen
are now only 1 mile apart. Russian troops
reached the Baltic coast 20 miles south
of Memel. There are 10000 Germans south
of the Scheldt in the pocket and a couple of
hours ago Frank Gillard reported from
Brussels that Biervliet has been reached
which is only 5 miles from the Leopold
Canal. Several other villages had also
been reached. The troops here are to
those the Canadians are up against
on the canal. The Canadians on the
Canal are fighting in drenching rain
and they are being swept by fire
but have dug in. Near Arnhem
a sharp German attack was thrown
back. North of Aachen an advance
of 600 yards is reported. Around
